Castillo to debut today

Second baseman Luis Castillo stands around before today's game. Ryan Lawrence (@ryanlawrence21) tweeted the picture.

Luis Castillo doesn’t have much time to impress the Phillies left on his ticking clock.

With over a week left to audition, Castillo will be starting today at second base, batting second in the line up according to a tweet by Todd Zolecki.

A year removed from an uncharacteristic and pitiful .235 season in which Castillo only played 80+ games, the questions asked have all been centered around whether or not the 35-year-old has anything left in the tank.

If Castillo doesn’t pan out, the Phillies can release him before Opening Day and will not have to pay him the $414,000 they signed him for. The New York Mets still have to pay Castillo $6 million this year so the aging former All-Star second baseman won’t have to worry about income this season.

Does Castillo have anything left in the tank? That remains to be seen. We’ll find out today at 1:05 today when the Phillies take on the Rays.
