The Phillies are in desperate need of a third baseman, and Kevin Youkilis is on their radar.
Fox Sports baseball writer Jon Morosi said the Phillies, along with the Dodgers and Indians among other teams, are interested in the 33-year-old free agent third baseman.
Youkilis may have lost a step from when he was a dominant hitter and almost-guarantee on-base guy but he can still play and manage at-bats, something the Phillies desperately need from that position.
Youkilis’ value is extended from where he can play in the field, which includes both first and third base. This would give the Phillies an option to spell Ryan Howard and have both Youkilis and Kevin Frandsen in against tough left-handed pitching.
Youkilis played with the Red Sox from 2004 until being traded in the middle of the season in 2012. Youkilis hit a career-low .235 with another career-low .745 OPS with the Red Sox and White Sox combined.
