In an odd move, the Phillies designated reliever Scott Mathieson for assignment Saturday afternoon. Catcher Dane Sardinha was called up in Mathieson’s place.
It was a very strange move to DFA Mathieson, who only made one appearance this season – his first in almost four years. In that spot, he allowed two runs on three hits in 2/3 innings. If the Phillies lose Mathieson on waivers, Ruben Amaro, Jr. will look like a total idiot.
The only reasonable cause to DFA Mathieson was because the Phillies are unsure of Carlos Ruiz’s injury and don’t want to hastily put him on the DL. If Mathieson clears waivers, I’m sure he will be available to come back up once the Ruiz situation cleared up. Sardinha is batting .254 with four homers and 20 RBI in 126 at-bats for Lehigh. Paul Hoover is currently hurt or else he would have been the call-up.
