The Phillies offered Joe Blanton, Shane Victorino, and Carlos Ruiz 2010 contracts. They also had to choose between Clay Condrey and Chad Durbin and picked Durbin, according to Todd Zolecki. Zolecki feels that the reason they didn’t offer Condrey a contract was that because it would go to arbitration, the Phillies would feel that he would win and make much more than the $650,000 he made in 2009, which makes a lot of sense.
I personally think that was a good move. Condrey is very steady and his stats were good, which would probably have earned him twice as much as he made last season. The Phillies still can sign Condrey and I hope they do. Deemed “Every Day Clay,” he is durable and can pitch when needed.
