PHILADELPHIA — It was a historic night for Placido Polanco.

Polanco got his 2,000th career hit in the 8th inning, and helped the Phillies to a 5-1 win by scoring three times on the game. HisĀ 2,000th hit was a two-run bomb to left-center, his first homer of the season.

Polanco’s offense, along with the spark provided by Freddy Galvis and Carlos Ruiz throughout the night were enough for starter Joe Blanton to get his fourth win of the season

Blanton pitched into the 8th for the second time in his last three starts, dominating the poor Astros offense in the win. In seven-plus innings, Blanton allowed a run on six hits and a walk, striking out seven.

Game 34: Polly Chasing A Milestone

With his 2-for-4 night (two doubles), Placido Polanco inched closer to the 2,000 hits milestone.

268 players currently have reached the 2,000-hit mark and Polanco could become the 269th very soon, needing only two more hits for 2,000.

Polanco has been swinging a hot bat this months, hitting .341 (14-for-41) with four doubles the last 10 games. With how well he’s hitting, it’s very likely that he does it tonight against the Padres in front of the Philadelphia crowd.

Whether or not the 36-year-old will get to 3,000 remains to be seen — likely doubtful. But the important thing is that Polanco has been swinging a hot bat for the Phillies, who have been a better offense overall during May thanks to players like him and Carlos Ruiz.

Howard stays hot; Phils sweep again

There is a runaway train running through the majors called the Philadelphia Phillies and it is not about to stop.

And the conductor of that train is the home run hitting first baseman Ryan Howard. The Big Piece knocked another home run out this series, his third in the last two games, as he had another big day to lead the Phils over the Rockies, 8-6, and complete the sweep.

It was the sixth straight win for the Phils, who still hold an eight-game lead on the 2nd place Braves.

Howard went 2-for-3 with a double, home run and four RBIs. You can attribute some of that success to the arrival of Hunter Pence. Since Pence was traded to the Phillies and inserted behind Howard in the line up, Howard is hitting .409(9-for-22) in five games with three doubles, four homers and nine RBIs.
