The Phillies have agreed to a one-year, $2.5 million deal with left-handed starter John Lannan.

Lannan is a “low-risk, high-reward” move for Ruben Amaro, who said that was the type of player he was pursuing for his fifth starter. Kyle Kendrick will most likely be the fourth starter in the rotation now.

Lannan, 28, has a 42-52 record and 4.01 ERA in his six Major League seasons, all with the Nationals. Last year, Lannan went 4-1 with a 4.43 ERA in six starts.

Lannan’s history against the Phillies is almost infamous. Lannan is 3-13 against the Phillies with a 5.53 ERA in 19 career starts.

But the stat that really stands out are the 11 times Lannan hit a Phillies batter. The most famous was when he plunked Chase Utley in Lannan’s Major League debut on July 26, 2007, breaking his hand. On the next pitch, Lannan hit Ryan Howard and was immediately ejected.

“I don’t think he was trying to hit me,” Utley said after that game. “It kinda got away from him. He’s a young guy. He hit two guys in a row. I don’t think he was throwing at us.”

Whacky 3rd dooms Lannan, Nats

The last time John Lannan faced the Phillies, he finally snapped a 13-game winless spell against Philadelphia with his first winning decision on June 1.

But things were back to normal tonight as Lanna, 1-10 in his career against the Phils, struggled again. Lannan’s night was highlighted by a miserable 3rd inning as the Phils beat Washington, 11-3.

The 3rd started off with Shane Victorino reaching on a throwing error by short stop Ian Desmond. After a Chase Utley single, Ryan Howard drove in Victorino to make it a 3-2 game. Hunter Pence was walked and the bases remained loaded for Raul Ibanez.

Ibanez hit a hard shot to first baseman Michael Morse, who snagged the ball with his backhand and flipping to Lannan for the only possible out at first. Utley scored on the play and the Phils went up 4-2. Lannan intentionally walked Carlos Ruiz to load the bases for Wilson Valdez.

This is where the inning got a little interesting.

Phillies sweeping, Washington weeping

After taking the first two games of the series, the Phillies were all lined up to sweep Washington.

With John Lannan, who is now 0-10 in 13 career starts against the Phillies, on the hill for Washington facing Roy Halladay, the Phillies best pitcher, anything short of victory would be shocking.

Lannan was chased early again and Halladay cruised through seven innings as the Phillies capped off the sweep with a 7-3 win.

Halladay allowed only two runs on six hits while striking out 10. Lannan wasn’t so good, getting knocked out in the 3rd inning before recording a single out. He allowed six runs, all in the 3rd, on a walk and seven hits.

Raul Ibanez continued his tear. After breaking an 0-for-35 slump, Ibanez is hitting 9-for-13 with four doubles, two home runs and five RBIs. He was 3-for-4 with a double, homer and three RBIs on the night. Read more of this post
