MIAMI — The Marlins pulled out the brooms and successfully swept the Phillies in their home park.

Philadelphia, making its first trip to Miami’s new stadium, fell again, 5-2, and were swept but the 4th place Marlins. The Phillies started the series only half a game behind Miami to get out of the cellar but they instead distanced themselves further in the bottom of the NL East.

Joe Blanton rebounded from a rocky first three innings to pitch a solid effort. He went six, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Blanton gave up back-to-back doubles and an RBI single in the 2nd inning to cough up a 1-0 lead created in the first by Juan Pierre’s triple and Hunter Pence’s RBI on a fielder’s choice.

Bullpen Shuffle: Phils Send Down Savery; DFA Qualls

PHILADELPHIA — After a nine-inning bullpen game turned into a disaster, the Phillies made a pair of moves within their bullpen again.

After the Phillies 11-7 loss to the Pirates in which the entire bullpen pitched, the Phillies made two roster moves.

“It kind of backfired,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said after the game. “We got lit up.”

Right after the game, the Phillies sent Joe Savery packing for Lehigh. The left-hander has been terrible all season, posting a 5.73 ERA in 23 innings pitched. In fact, the Phillies are an astonishing 0-17 in games that Savery pitched.

In his place, they called up left-hander Brian Sanches. Sanches had pitched in three games this season, allowing five earned runs in four innings.

Injury Updates: Utley, Contreras, Qualls, Howard

Just summarizing what Matt Gelb had to report today on the health of some of the Phillies…

Chase Utley — There is nothing really new here. Utley is still out in Arizona working on strengthening his knee.

There is still no timetable for his return, not even a comparison to the 43 games he missed last season.

“I couldn’t tell you that because we have to wait to see when he starts to play in games how he feels, how he’s doing,” GM Ruben Amaro said. “Chase is the kind of guy, as he’s shown in the past, when he wants to go, he goes. Last year when he came back, he was stealing bases, he was running. The one thing he didn’t have a whole lot of was his strength, which is something that he’s working on right now.”

Phillies sign RHP Qualls

The Phillies are continuing their minor tweaking of the bull pen, adding more depth to an already deep group of pitchers.

According to Todd Zolecki, the Phillies signed right-handed reliever Chad Qualls to $1.15 million deal.

Qualls, 33, will give the Phillies a top option in the late innings and could become Jonathan Papelbon’s set-up man. He pitched 66 of his 76 games last season in the last three innings.

Qualls was 6-8 with a 3.51 ERA in 76 games with the San Diego Padres. He struck out 43 batters in 74 1/3 innings.
