Howard cleared to shed boot

The boot is off and the Big Piece is free.

A cheery Ryan Howard spoke to reporters today, cracking a few jokes. It’s a bright and sunshiny like atmosphere in Clearwater despite the dark cloud of injuries that has loomed the past week.

“This new invention called a left shoe. It’s nice,” Howard joked.

Howard is going to look at that walking boot every day and use it as a reminder of how far he needs to go to get back to being one of the best hitting first basemen in baseball.

“I’m going to keep it for a while,” Howard said of the walking boot, which he keeps in front of his locker. “Maybe burn it.”

Ryan Howard is not letting the clunky walking boot that’s on his left foot hinder him.

Howard was throwing with trainer Scott Sheridan this morning on the warning track at Ashburn Field at the Carpenter Complex.

“I’m trying to do what I can so when I’m actually out of the boot I can hit the ground running,” Howard told reporters this morning.

Howard had an infection in the wound where he received his first surgery on his torn Achilles suffered in October. He had to have a second operation performed to clean the initial wound and found himself back in the boot.

Originally the Phillies had hoped Howard would be back by May but the setbacks have made that a long shot.

Injury Updates: Howard, Brown, Contreras and the missing Utley

Earlier this morning, Domonic Brown had an MRI on his injured right thumb. The results of that MRI showed Brown has some inflammation in his thumb, which he sprained on Monday diving for a ball against the Yankees.

But fortunately for Brown, who also fractured his hamate bone last season in the same hand during Spring Training, this injury isn’t as serious and he should be back in the line up next week.

HOWARD IN A BOOT — Ryan Howard will be put back in a walking boot for a week.

“Maybe longer,” G.M. Ruben Amaro said. “We’re just being really cautious with it. The wound itself has to heal. He’s doing fine. We just want to make sure it heals. It’ll heal. … We just want to make sure we don’t have any more recurrence of any infections at all.”

Unfortunately, but being in the walking boot, Howard won’t be working out, doing his conditioning and staying in shape. It’s a setback.

Spring Training News – Leap Edition

Spring training is being kicked off with a bang, or in Domonic Brown’s case, a smash and the sound of a car alarm. Looks like he’ll be buying the Big Truck dinner tonight.

Anyway, some news came out of clearwater today. Ryan Howard had a set-back the other day when the stitches on his Achilles injury ripped open.

“I don’t prefer to use (set-back),” said Phillies trainer Scott Sheridan. “I know that’s what everybody wants to use. We had never established a particular time frame for him, and right now it’s one of those things that happens in the rehab process. We just have to move forward from it.”

But the good news is that the tendon itself is intact and Howard will only inactive a few more days with an infection. Read Sheridan’s comments on Todd Zolecki’s blog.

As you know, today marks the first game of Spring Training as the Phillies take on Florida State at 1:05 PM. Austin Hyatt will get the start for the Phillies.

That being said, the rest of the pitching schedule has been set. Read more of this post

Howard had surgery this morning

Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard had surgery this morning in Baltimore. Dr. Mark Myerson, a renown orthopedic surgeon did the surgery on his ruptured left Achillies tendon.

Yesterday, Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said that Howard will likely be out four months after the surgery. He is hopeful to have his star slugger back in the line up by April.

Earlier today, Shane Victorino, Jimmy Rollins and Ruben Amaro Jr. all held press conferences starting at 11:30.

Tomorrow, Charlie Manuel will address the media to answer more questions on a struggling offense among other things that went wrong last week in the Phils NLDS exit to the Cardinals in five games.

Along with the press conferences, a series of other small updates occurred today.

-You can read about Rollins’ presser and some Amaro comments here.

-Victorino discussed disappointment in his press conference. He also talked about the Phils offense and how he knows that Manuel won’t want to change anything about their approach to hitting.

-Amaro’s comments can be read on CSN Philly. To summarize, he challenged Manuel and hitting coach Greg Gross to do a better job with the offense. He also didn’t go into any detail on negotiations – nothing unusual – with Rollins, starting pitcher Cole Hamles and closer Ryan Madson. He did express that he would like to have all three back.
