The Phillies have completed their two-part hitting coach process.

Today, the Phillies found their assistant hitting coach, choosing Wally Joyner over a handful of candidates that reportedly included former Phillies Matt Stairs and Mike Sweeney.

Joyner played 16 seasons in the Majors with four different teams, hitting .289 with an on-base percentage of .368. The Phillies hope that Joyner, along with Steve Henderson, can impost a philosophy that involves patience at the plate.

“The system will be better with an assistant in so much that different guys take information in different ways,” Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said. “I think it’s important for our players to see different points of view and get information in different ways.”

Joyner was the hitting coach for the Padres in the 2007 and 2008 seasons. But for the last four years, he was working out of the country and out of Major League Baseball

During those four years, Joyner has worked as the lead hitting instructor for MLB International’s Elite-level development programs in Italy and Brazil. He also served as China’s hitting coach in the latest World Baseball Classic.

Salisbury: Phillies Interested In Stairs, Sweeney As Hitting Assistant

PHILADELPHIA — The theme of the day has been the coaching staff.

There is one final bit of news for the day in regards to the staff.

According to a source of Jim Salisbury the Phillies are interested in a pair of former bench bats as aides to the newly appointed hitting coach, Steve Henderson.

Salisbury reported that the Phillies are interested in Matt Stairs and Mike Sweeney as possible assistant hitting coaches.

General manager Ruben Amaro said earlier today that the Phillies are looking at a two-man approach to the hitting job position, something a few other teams in baseball are doing or have done recently.

“It’s something that’s worked for some other clubs,” Amaro said. “We’ve researched it quite a bit, so we’re going to go with a two-man crew in that regard.”

PHILADELPHIA — Yesterday, the Phillies fired first base coach Sam Perlozzo as well as cut ties with hitting coach Greg Gross and bench coach Pete Mackanin.

With those spots vacated it left room for a certain minor league manager to get his first real crack at Major League coaching.

Hall of Fame second baseman and former IronPigs manager Ryne Sandberg will coach third base. Last year’s third base coach Juan Samuel will move to first base.

Sandberg will also become the infield instructor, which was Perlozzo’s job.
