A deal for Astros reliever Wilton Lopez fell through, possibly due to a failed physical.
The Phillies agreed to acquire Lopez, who had elbow problems last season, for a handful of near-Major League-ready prospects.
Jim Salisbury writes:
While it’s unclear if the Phils backed away from the Lopez deal because of health concerns, it is clear that the team is still looking for a reliever who can help in the eighth inning. Finding one will be one of GM Ruben Amaro Jr.’s missions at the winter meetings, which begin Monday in Nashville.
Before Lopez, the Phillies expressed interest in free agent Ryan Madson, who signed with the Angels. Mike Adams is still on the free-agent market. The Phils were interested in trading for him two seasons ago when he was in San Diego.
Brandon Lyon was also mentioned as being on the Phillies radar.
