WASHINGTON — “That’s the first time I ever won and got beat.”
Those were the words Charlie Manuel used to describe the Phillies 2-0 win over the Nationals Monday night. Despite Philadelphia’s win, the Braves’ 2-1 loss to Pittsburgh clinched the Nationals their first NL East division crown.
Darin Ruf hit a two-run triple in the 2nd inning and that was all Kyle Kendrick needed.
Kendrick, who all but cemented a spot in the 2013 rotation, pitched seven shutout innings, allowing only four hits and a walk, striking out four. His effort dropped his ERA to 3.90, the fourth time in six years he had an ERA under 4.00.
Manuel said it himself that Kendrick, “is in there. Unless we get Price or someone like that.”
Phillippe Aumont recorded his second save of his career.
