QUEENS, NY — Ryan Howard knew it. Josh Edgin knew it. Heck, everyone in the stadium knew it.
Howard’s two-run blast off Edgin in the 9th inning gave the Phillies a 3-2 lead and win, helping them in their chase for the post season.
Howard struggled at the dish, striking out twice before his 9th inning at bat.
“I was struggling, period. There’s no secret about it,” Howard said. “Even throughout the entire game today, I struggled trying to catch up to the fastball. My swing was a little long. I just caught up to a fastball and was able to get a big hit.”
The Phillies on a whole struggled too, and they aren’t going to win many games with only three runs on three hits. But they did tonight and they snuck away with the win.
Jimmy Rollins lead off the game with a solo homer and the Phillies were then held hitless by Matt Harvey through seven innings. Their only other hits came off Edgin, the second being Howard’s two-run homer that won the game.
Cole Hamels was strong in his start, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out 10.
HR: Rollins (22), Howard (11).
