Kendrick, Phillies Overcome Early Runs

Phillies 3, Mets 2
WP – Kyle Kendrick (8-9, 4.01)
LP – Jon Niese (10-8, 3.55)
SV – Jonathan Papelbon (30)

PHILADELPHIA — The Phillies managed to prevent a sweep of the Mets with their 3-2 victory Thursday afternoon.

Kendrick overcame a rocky start in the first two innings as his offense backed him for his sixth win since the All-Star break. He lasted 7 2/3 innings, allowing only two runs on seven hits while striking out six.

Both runs surrendered by Kendrick were solo homers. The first came from Mike Baxter to lead off the game and the second came the following inning off the bat of Scott Hairston.

The Phillies cut the lead in half in the 3rd inning. After doubling, Jimmy Rollins scored on a Kevin Frandsen single to make it 2-1.

They tied the game up the next inning on Ty Wigginton’s RBI double. They broke the lead in the 5th inning on Ryan Howard’s sacrifice fly.

Rollins was pulled from the game after the 6th inning, most likely due to him not hustling on a Frandsen pop up. If this is the case, it’s the second time in the past month Rollins will be guilty of not hustling.

2B: Rollins (30), Wigginton (9), Frandsen (3), Mayberry (18), Kendrick (2).
