Phillies Shut Down Vance Worley For Season

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Phillies have shut down right-handed starting pitcher Vance Worley.

Worley, who had been pitching with a bone chip in his right elbow for the last three months, will have surgery on his right elbow in 7-10 days.

Worley was pulled with one out in the 5th inning of yesterday’s 9-5 loss to the Mets. He had thrown only 60 pitches, allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out four.

He has struggled all season, posting a 6-9 record and 4.20 ERA. He averaged less than six innings-per-start as well, throwing 133 innings in 23 starts this season.

Taking Worley’s spot, at least temporarily, is right-hander Tyler Cloyd. Cloyd will start tonight in place of Cole Hamels, who is out with a gastrointestinal illness.

Cloyd could possibly pitch in the rotation the remainder of the season depending on how well the 25-year-old rookie does in his Major League debut tonight.
