PHILADELPHIA — Phillies left-handed ace Cole Hamels has a gastrointestinal illness and will not be able to start tonight for the Phillies against the Mets.
The Phillies selected the contract of right-hander Tyler Cloyd from Lehigh and he will make his Major League debut tonight.
Cloyd, 25, is 12-1 with a 2.35 ERA and a league-best 1.01 WHIP in 22 starts with Lehigh. He was named the International League pitcher of the year.
Cloyd’s fastball tops out at around 89-90 MPH and he uses his accuracy to get hitters out. It worked in Triple-A, but the Phillies are interested in seeing if it will work in the Majors.
