PHILADELPHIA — The Phillies manufactured an early first inning run, a good start for Cliff Lee.
In fact, Lee was dealing a spectacular outing against the Cards, having retired 12 straight batters through innings 2-5. But one swing from Matt Holliday changed that in the 6th and it was all Jake Westbrook and St. Louis needed in a 4-1 win over the Phillies on Saturday.
Lee was absolutely on his best stuff through the first five innings. It changed in the blink of an eye, though.
Jon Jay led off the 6th with a single and Allen Craig followed it up with a double to put runners on second and third. Holliday then took Lee’s 1-2 fastball deep for a three-run homer to give the Cards a 3-1 lead.
Westbrook coasted the rest of the way with the lead, shutting the Phillies down through 7 2/3 innings. He gave up only one run, an RBI on a Ryan Howard ground out, on four hits and two walks while striking out three.
