Braves 12, Phillies 6
WP – Chad Durbin (4-1, 3.07)
LP – Antonio Bastardo (2-4, 5.45)
PHILADELPHIA — With the swing of a bat, Ryan Howard capped a five-run comeback in the 5th inning to give the Phillies new life.
But the rally was lost in the 7th and Antonio Bastardo on the mound. Melting down in relief, Bastardo was shelled and the five-run 5th was erased as the Phillies lost 12-6.
Bastardo was beat up for three runs in the 7th. After getting the first two outs, he gave up a double and a pair of walks before being lifted for Josh Lindblom.
Lindblom proceeded to give up a bases-clearing double to Chipper Jones that gave the Braves a 9-6 lead. Atlanta scored one more in the inning off a throwing error by third baseman Kevin Frandsen.
The Braves tacked on a couple more in the 8th on an RBI double by Michael Bourn and an RBI ground out by Freddie Freeman to make it 12-6.
The meltdown erased a five-run 5th inning that put the Phillies back in the game. Starting pitcher Kyle Kendrick was tattooed for six runs in only 3 1/3 innings of work.
The Phillies began the comeback with back-to-back RBI doubles by Jimmy Rollins and Domonic Brown to cut the lead in half to make it 6-3. After Chase Utley was hit by a pitch, Ryan Howard crushed a three-run homer off Tim Hudson to tie the game up.
Hudson’s day was done after walking John Mayberry. Nate Schierholtz nearly gave the Phils the lead but Bourn made a spectacular grab to end the threat.
2B: Rollins (25), Brown (3). HR: Howard (6).
