Early lead propels D’Backs to win

Diamondbacks 4, Phillies 2
WP – Ian Kennedy (10-8, 4.15)
LP – Kyle Kendrick (4-9, 4.45)
SV – JJ Putz (20)

PHILADELPHIA — When Joe Blanton was traded to the Dodgers before the game, Kyle Kendrick was given the spot start.

Unfortunately for Kendrick, he fell behind early and the Phillies never could recover in a 4-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Justin Upton started the game off in the first inning with a solo home run, the 100th of his career. Ironically, his brother Rays outfielder BJ Upton hit his 100th career home run.

Paul Goldschmidt and Chris Johnson each had an RBI to give the Diamondbacks a 3-0 lead.

But the Phillies were able to chip away at the lead. Chase Utley hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. Newly acquired Nate Schierholtz hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Kevin Frandsen to cut the lead to 3-2.

Unfortunately that was as close as the Phillies would get.

Jason Kubel added a solo home run in the ninth inning off Josh Lindblom.

2B: Mayberry (15)
