CORONA, NY — Take a load off, Cliff Lee.
The weight has finally been lifted off Lee’s shoulders. The Phillies left-hander earned his first win of the season on his 14th start, a 9-2 win over the Mets that snapped the team’s six-game losing streak.
Lee pitched eight beautiful innings, allowing only two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out nine. He became the 360th Major League pitcher this year to earn a win.
The Phillies were getting shut out, 2-0, until the offense erupted for three runs in each of the last three innings.
In the 7th, Chase Utley and Carlos Ruiz hit back-to-back home runs, a two-run and solo shot, to give the Phillies a 3-2 lead.
They poured it on in the 8th with a Jimmy Rollins RBI double and a pair of RBI singles by Ruiz and Hunter Pence to give the Phils a 6-2 lead. In the 9th, Rollins drove in a run on a force out and Ty Wigginton hit a two-run blast, making it a 9-2 route.
