According to Amanda Comak of the Washington Times, the Washington Nationals have designated right-handed reliever Brad Lidge for assignment.
Comack added that nothing has been made official from the team yet but Lidge wasn’t included in today’s lineup card. UPDATE: It’s official.
Lidge, 35, is struggling in 2012. In 11 games he’s 0-1 with a 9.64 ERA in 9 1/3 innings.
Though he’s been bad, it would be an interesting option for the Phillies, who boast one of the worst bullpens in baseball.
Lidge may have struggled in Washington but if he’s put back in a familiar situation with a familiar pitching coach in Rich Dubee, he could turn into a competent arm out of the pen.
Matt Gelb feels it’s unlikely the Phils pursue Lidge because his history past was a red flag this off season.
