Chase Utley will be back in a Phillies uniform no later than July 2.
The All-Star second baseman will start his official rehab assignment tomorrow with the Clearwater Threshers (A).
As a position player, Utley will have 20 days at the most to rehab, meaning July 2 is the latest he can return to the Phillies lineup.
(Actually, the latest is July 3 against New York because the Phillies are off on July 2.)
The boost from Utley will be much needed. The Phillies are going to have to endure three more weeks of Michael Martinez and Mike Fontenot platooning at second base while Freddy Galvis is out for an extended period of time with a pars fracture (lower back).
Also, the Phillies are currently eight games out of first place and four games under .500.
Utley will be a designated hitter to start. It isn’t known when he will play in the field.
