The Phillies have signed their first overall pick of the MLB Amateur Draft today.
Right-handed pitcher Shane Watson, picked with the 4oth overall pick, agreed to terms with the Phillies to sign. The Phillies also signed their second and third draft picks, all at slot value, according to Matt Gelb.
By reaching the earlier deadline, it will benefit both sides.
Watson’s scouting report that I posted last week when he was picked:
Watson is a 6’4″, 200-pounder from California. Ranked 30th by Baseball America, Watson throws a fastball is in the mid-90s. He has a good breaking ball and a cutter in his arsenal as well.
The Phillies said he reminds them a lot of former first round pick Brett Myers because of his devastating curveball, competitiveness and fire on the mound.
