Phillies manager Charlie Manuel told the media today that the front office is seeking bullpen help from outside the organization.
The Phils bullpen has been atrocious, everyone knows this. Even pen aces Jonathan Papelbon and Antonio Bastardo are going through a rough patch.
But the main problem is a lack of depth leading up to Papelbon. As Matt Gelb pointed out, they have only two righties pitching before Paps: a struggling Chad Qualls and his 5.32 ERA and Michael Schwimer, who has already been up and down with the IronPigs this year.
“We’re in a tough spot right now,” Manuel said. “I think everybody knows that. We’re in a tough spot, but we still have to come out and play as good as we possibly can and see if that’s enough.”
Assistent GM Scott Proefrock didn’t say whether the Phils were in any trade talks so no names have been tossed around just yet.
“We’re always trying to get better,” he said. “That’s what our job is.”
