The Phillies are continuing their minor tweaking of the bull pen, adding more depth to an already deep group of pitchers.
According to Todd Zolecki, the Phillies signed right-handed reliever Chad Qualls to $1.15 million deal.
Qualls, 33, will give the Phillies a top option in the late innings and could become Jonathan Papelbon’s set-up man. He pitched 66 of his 76 games last season in the last three innings.
Qualls was 6-8 with a 3.51 ERA in 76 games with the San Diego Padres. He struck out 43 batters in 74 1/3 innings.
