This will be a running thread to update on the Jimmy Rollins situation.
6:30 PM — Newly signed pitcher Dontrelle Willis believes his good friend Jimmy Rollins will re-sign with the Phillies.
“He was probably more excited about the deal than I was,” Willis said of Rollins.
Willis and Rollins grew up together in Oakland.
4:22 PM — Contrary to reports yesterday, the rumor that the Tigers were having negotiations with Jimmy Rollins’ agent were false and that the Tigers don’t have the money to sign Rollins.
5:09 — Jimmy Rollins’ agent Dan Lozano told the Phillies there is a second team interested in Rollins, according to ESPN’s Jayson Stark. Stark said that the Tigers are believed to be that second team.
2:30 — St. Louis’ deal with Furcal could reach $14 million over two years.
Phillies are the last logical team in on Rollins.
12:26 — Ken Rosenthal reports that the St. Louis Cardinals are near a deal with short stop Rafael Furcal. If he signs there, it’s another suitor out of the race for Jimmy Rollins.
4:00 PM — The Milwaukee Brewers officially took themselves out of the hunt for Jimmy Rollins when they signed Alex Gonzalez to a one-year deal with a vesting option.
Looks like the Phillies only real threat now is St. Louis.
11:40 — The Phillies have left the Winter Meetings without reaching a deal with free agent short stop Jimmy Rollins, according to Bob Brookover.
General Manager Ruben Amaro remains confident:
“Nothing is scheduled (with Rollins’ agent Dan Lozano), but I’m sure we’ll be in touch with each other sometime soon,” general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said after the Rule 5 draft brought an official close to the winter meetings. “I’m concerned about filling that spot, but overall I’m not concerned.”
12:04 AM — As expected, free agents Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Madson and Raul Ibanez all declined arbitration.
11:22 — Rollins himself confirms he is not accepting arbitration.
11:00 — Jim Salisbury just kicked every Phillies fan in the gut with this tweet: “Phillies sources say there was no meeting with Jimmy Rollins rep tonite.”
What is going on right now?
9:00 — According to the Inquirer’s Bob Brookover, a deal with Rollins could very well be reached tonight. “Phils meeting with Rollins’ agent Lozano right now and could get to finish line tonight.”
8:00 — The first indication that the Phillies and free agent short stop Jimmy Rollins are near a deal: “Rollins’ agent Dan Lozano cancelled yesterday’s meeting with Brewers.”
Noon — Tom Haudricourt of the Journal Sentinal in Milwaukee said the Brewers are out of the running for Rollins, instead looking to re-sign Yuniesky Betancourt among other options.
