The Phillies magic number has dropped to one game, but it was not by way of victory.
The Mets did their job, beating the Atlanta Braves, but the Phils failed to beat St. Louis and clinch the division. With their magic number now at one for the division and two for homefield, the Phils lost to the Cards, 4-2 in 11 innings.
In the top of the 11th, Tyler Greene hit a two-run double to give St. Louis the 4-2 lead off Michael Schwimer, who was a day removed from his first career win.
Vance Worley got the start, allowing a run on six hits and three walks while striking out five. The bull pen went four scoreless before Schwimer’s poor 11th inning.
2B: Polanco (13), Mayberry (16), Howard (29).
WP: McClellan (11-7). LP: Schwimer (1-1). S: Salas (24).
PIG WATCH — The Lehigh Valley IronPigs have lost in the Governor’s Cup to the Columbus Clippers, 4-1. The Phils recalled P Justin DeFratus and OF Dom Brown as well as C Erik Kratz, LHP Joe Savery and OF Brandon Moss. Also, manager Ryne Sandberg will wear a Phils uniform the rest of the season.
