There was no 9th-inning miracle in store for the Diamondbacks this go around.
With the score tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the 7th, the wheels officially fell of Arizona starter Joe Saunders. Saunders got roughed up for three runs in the 7th before recording an out and the Phils pulled away in a 9-2 blow out win in Philadelphia.
John Mayberry had a big game, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Jimmy Rollins and Wilson Valdez drove in a pair of runs and Hunter Pence went 2-for-2 with a double.
Rollins started bottom of the 1st off with a solo home run. It was his second lead-off homer of the season and 37th in his career. But Arizona answered right back in the 2nd with a two-run homer by Paul Goldschmidt. But that was all the scoring Cliff Lee would allow on the night.
Lee was fantastic, allowing three hits and two runs in seven innings while striking out seven. It was Lee’s 13th win on the season.
The Phils broke the 2-2 lead in the 7th. Pence walked and Mayberry singled to set up Valdez’s two-run double. Saunders’ night was done but he was still held accountable for Valdez, who scored on two sacrifice hits later to make it 5-2.
2B: Pence (30), Valdez (9), Victorino (21). HR: Rollins (14).
WP: Lee (13-7). LP: Saunders (8-10).
