PHILS SCOUTING BELTRAN — Carlos Beltran is one of a handful of right-handed hitting outfielders on the Phillies radar as we head into the final week of the trade deadline. Though Hunter Pence is the player the Phils prefer, it’s now doubtful that Houston would want to move the 28-year-old All-Star.
Instead, it seems the Phillies’ focus has shifted to Beltran. It was reported by Steve Popper, a Mets reporter for the Bergen County Times, this morning that the Phillies have two scouts following the Mets to Cincy for their series against the Reds.
Still no word on what type of player or players the Phillies would be willing to give up for Beltran but they have said Domonic Brown and RHP prospect Jarred Cosart are untouchable.
OSWALT/POLANCO PROGRESSING — As reported yesterday, Roy Oswalt will begin his rehab on Wednesday in Lehigh Valley.
Oswalt is currently on the DL for the second time this season with a back injury. He’s 4-6 with a 3.79 ERA in 13 starts this season.
Polanco’s bulging disc in his back is feeling much better after receiving a shot in his back a few days ago. He told reporters this morning he’s looking to start rehab games on Thursday. He’s been on the DL retroactive to July 4.
PIGS MOSS MAKES ESPN TOP 10 — AAA Lehigh Valley IronPigs OF Brandon Moss made a spectacular grab in yesterdays game against the Columbus Clipper. But how amazing was hit play? Here’s a video courtesy of the blogging legend Mike Meech of the Fightins.
The play cracked ESPN’s Top 10, topping out at #3. Unfortunately, he was bested by Alex Morgan and San Diego’s Chris Denorfia’s home run robbing catch off Raul Ibanez’s bat.
There was a rumor about Matt Kemp coming to the phillies last week any further evidence that might be an option?
Dave, I do not think so. From the person I talked to, they said the Phils were interested but LA had no reason to trade Kemp. Plus I think MLB is preventing them from making any type of “fire sale” moves with the financial problems they are having (killing Kershaw to the Yanks rumors).
So, Kemp is highly doubtful.
