UPDATE: Kyle Kendrick will start on Saturday after the speculations were made.
Last season, Kendrick started twice against Pittsburgh and was the winner in both games. He went 17 combined innings (one complete game) and allowed six runs, five earned.
In his career against Pittsburgh, Kendrick is 4-0 with a 2.61 ERA.
When asked who was starting Saturday, pitching coach Rich Dubee joked: “Pedro Martinez.”
On a serious note, Dubee is not a fan of going with 11 pitchers when Shane Victorino returns on Friday and Mike Zagurski is sent back down, Ryan Lawrence tweeted.
ORIGINAL: Today the Phillies announced that reliever Mike Zagurski was recalled to take Vance Worley’s spot on the roster. Worley was sent down after the Phillies 5-4 win in Washington yesterday.
In a prior stint with the Phillies this season, Zagurski was 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA in two games.
Zagurski was a key component in the Lehigh Valley IronPigs bullpen. He was 1-0 with a 1.88 ERA with nine saves in 14.1 innings this season.
Zagurski may not be staying more than a few days because Shane Victorino is likely to be activated from the disabled on Friday.
The decision to send down Worley in the first place was a questionable one.
Now the Phillies must decide if they are going to skip Worley’s old spot in the rotation or pitch Kyle Kendrick in Pittsburgh this weekend.
Kendrick could pitch against Pittsburgh as he was 2-0 against them last season. He went at least eight innings in both starts.
