Contreras makes final rehab appearance

Phillies reliever Jose Contreras, who has been sidelined since April 21st with elbow soreness, pitched two scoreless in Game 1 of a doubleheader for Lehigh Valley this morning. He threw 14 of 20 pitches for strikes and only allowed two singles. The speculation is that Contreras will be activated from the disabled list before Wednesday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds. Phillies’ beat writer Matt Gelb thinks that David Herndon will be sent down to make room for Contreras.

The Phillies bullpen has been very good so far this season despite missing Contreras and Brad Lidge. Youngsters Antonio Bastardo and Michael Stutes have come up and been used in late inning situations. They have done a great job and have really kept the team afloat. Getting Contreras back would be huge for the bullpen. He will likely be the set up man as Ryan Madson has pitched very well, notching nine saves in nine chances and boasting a 0.47  ERA.
