Contreras Lands On DL

Following the team’s 3-1 victory over the San Diego Padres tonight, the Phillies placed closer Jose Contreras on the 15-day disabled list. Contreras has a flexor pronator strain in his right arm. He is due to fly back to Philadelphia for an MRI. Taking his place on the roster will be reliever Mike Stutes from the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

Stutes is a strong right-handed reliever that turned heads in spring training. He was expected to join the big club at some point during this season but obviously this is a special circumstance. With the IronPigs this season, Stutes is 2-1 with a 1.80 ERA and has recorded 14 strikeouts. He has only given up two runs so far in the International League season.

Stutes is a guy that could potentially help this team. The only two right-handed relievers that the team has to depend on are Contreras and Ryan Madson. The question now becomes: who is the setup man? Kyle Kendrick? Danys Baez? I think that Stutes could grab himself a full-time major league gig if he is successful in the early going. He showed this spring that he has the stuff to compete at the major league level. Now let’s see if he can put it all together and help out the Phillies bullpen.
