Vote for Mike Schmidt!

Michael Jack Schmidt. The greatest third baseman of all time. The man who carried the 1980 team to the franchise’s first championship. He is the greatest Philadelphia athlete of all time.

Hitting 548 homers, hitting a solid .267 and averaging 107 RBIs over a course of a 162-game season, Schmidt is the best at what he did. He’s a 12-time All-Star, six-time Silver Slugger and three-time NL MVP. He won the home run crown eight times and the RBI crown four times. His fielding was also very good, racking up eight Gold Gloves.

Probably the greatest memory of Schmidt’s is the moment he became the first and still is the only true 500 home run club member.

On April 18, 1987 the Phillies were trailing the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 in the top of the ninth inning at Three Rivers Stadium. Schmidt was 0-for-3 for the game. He smacked the offering by Don Robinson, his 500th home run, over the fence at Three Rivers to cement his place in history.

Listen to Harry Kalas’ call here.

Guys, I can post box scores and go through the rich history on why Schmidt is the greatest. But I’m not going to bore you to death with all that crap.

As Phillies fans, you should know what Schmidt left on this franchise. You should have been born understanding his legacy. As fans, you should recognize that he is the greatest athlete to wear a Phillies uniform and should have his name held in a higher standard than the other three individuals in the final four.

Folks, vote for Michael Jack Schmidt. Bobby Clarke don’t stand a chance!
