Ryan Howard started the very young Phillies season off with a bang.
As expected the Phillies smoked the D-1 Florida State baseball team, 8-0, in the first action of Spring Training today. Howard’s two-run double set off a four-run first inning for the Phillies. Carlos Ruiz was the only other regular to drive in a run.
Florida State is a very good collegiate team as they are the favorites to win the ACC this year. Drew Naylor started and pitched two shut-out innings as the rest of the team combined to allow four hits and three walks while striking out 11.
Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins were the only everyday players to not participate in today’s game. Manuel said sitting Utley “was my idea. I just went and told him,” and that Utley is fine but a little sore.
WP: Naylor (1-0)
2B: Howard (1).
