The Phillies only had 10 days to decide Sergio Escalona’s fate. They had to either waive him, release him or trade him. The Phillies elected for the third option, sending him to Houston (or the Phillies AAA ball club) for second baseman Albert Cartwright.
Cartwright, 23, hit a combined .294 with 30 doubles, 14 triples, 10 home runs, 55 RBI and 31 stolen bases in 127 games with the Single A and AA affiliates of the Astros last season.
Escalona, 26, went 4-8 with a 3.81 ERA in 50 games with AA Reading. He had 53 strikeouts in 54.1 innings. His last major league appearance was in 2009 when he appeared in 14 games with the Phillies.
