The man who was brought to Philadelphia to be the savior and deliver the Phils another World Series ring led the way to clinch the East.
Roy Halladay’s complete game shut out led the Phillies to a 8-0 win over Washington and a fourth straight division title.
Doc went the distance, allowing only two hits and striking out five. It was Halladay’s best start in a while as he turned human for a few-week. But the dominance he showed over the Nationals gave a great indication of the type of year he is having.
The win was Halladay’s ninth complete game of the year and his fourth shut out, leading the league in both categories.
The Phils got the scoring stated in the second. Jayson Werth led off the inning, smoking an offering my John Lannan into the left field bleachers for a 1-0 lead. He later drove in two runs on a two-out RBI double in the sixth that gave the Phils a 3-0 lead.
After adding another run in the sixth, the Phils scored four in the ninth, capped off by an RBI infield single.
Placido Polanco, Werth, and Carlos Ruiz each had three-hit games for the Phils. Werth drove in four runs, falling a triple shy of the cycle, Chooch doubled twice, and Utley drove in a pair of runs.
The Phils can coast for the rest of the season. With Halladay lined up to pitch the last game of the season in Atlanta, it will be interesting to see if he goes. If not, he could be seeing over a week’s worth of rest.
