That Bastardo Is Back

After Sunday’s win over the Mets, John Mayberry, Jr. was seen packing his stuff. When reporters asked why, he said he was being sent back down to Lehigh and that a pitcher will be coming up in his place. The Phils announced today that the pitcher is left-hander Antonio Bastardo.

Bastardo went on the DL after the mid-June series against the New York Yankees. His last outing wasn’t a pleasant one either as he allowed two runs without surrendering a hit. He plunked a pair of batters and walked another before being pulled.

As Todd Zolecki said in his blog post, the addition of Bastardo will give them the lefty vs. lefty match up in late innings when facing James Loney and Andre Ethier, two of the Dodgers’ best hitters. J.C. Romero has just been awful lately. His 8.1 walks/9 is the highest of his career.

Mayberry was hitless in his two at-bats with the Phillies.

RANSOM ACCEPTS ASSIGNMENT – Cody Ransom cleared waivers and accepted his assignment to AAA Lehigh. Ransom was DFA’d when Mike Sweeney was acquired. Ransom had hit .190 with two home runs and five RBIs in 22 games for Philly.
