Kyle Kendrick is helping to quiet the people who are upset at the J.A. Happ trade for Roy Oswalt. In his third start since being called back up from the AAA, Kendrick pitched six great innings as the Phils stifled the Marlins, 7-2. With Atlanta’s win over the Mets, the Phils will stay at two games back.
Kendrick allowed only two runs in his six innings of work. The Marlins got eight hits off Kendrick but fell victim to strikes five times. Kendrick even helped his cause by hitting a double in the sixth in which he scored off of Raul Ibanez’s sacrifice fly. The bull pen held it down to preserve Kendrick’s win.
The Phils got two runs in the first inning thanks to RBIs by Ross Gload and Domonic Brown. Ibanez and Brown then each drove in a run in the fifth inning to make it 4-1 and the Phils added another in the sixth to make it 5-2.
Brown went 1-for-4 with three RBIs, a high in his young career, and Ibanez went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair. Jimmy Rollins and Placido Polanco each had a pair of hits. Gabby Sanchez went 4-for-4 for the Marlins and Mike Stanton homered.
2B: Kendrick (2).
WP: Kendrick (7-4). LP: Sanchez (8-7).
