The Phillies are in dire need of a starting pitcher. The fans wanted Cliff Lee, they got prospects. Then they wanted Jayson Werth signed, now it looks like he’s going to be the player traded for a new starting pitcher in a companion deal. And with the loss of Jamie Moyer today to an elbow strain, Amaro may be pulling the trigger faster.
Moyer was injured in the first inning, straining his left elbow. Recently called-up Andrew Carpenter and Danys Baez allowed six runs in the next four innings as the Cardinals beat the Phillies 7-1 Tuesday night.
The Cardinals amassed 15 hits in the game, getting home runs from Randy Winn and Matt Holliday. Felipe Lopez had a three-hit game and Holliday drove in three runs, all on his three-run bomb off Baez in the fifth.
Placido Polanco and Jayson Werth had multi-hit games for the Phillies. Werth and Shane Victorino’s back-to-back doubles in the seventh got the Phillies their lone run.
The Phillies have lost five of six coming out of the All-Star break. They have two more games against the Cardinals, facing Jamie Garcia and Adam Wainwright while putting Joe Blanton and Cole Hamels on the hill.
2B: Werth (29), Victorino (14), Howard (17). 3B: Polanco (1).
WP: C. Carpenter (11-3). LP: Moyer (0-1).
