Kendrick Sent Down

The Phillies optioned starter Kyle Kendrick to Lehigh Valley today.  Kendrick was 5-4 with a 4.82 ERA in 20 games this season.  In addition, the Phillies recalled right-hander Andrew Carpenter from Lehigh Valley.  Carpenter is 7-6 with a 3.41 ERA this season.  Carpenter has one career start for the Phillies and has a 9.45 ERA.

Kendrick’s demotion was likely a result of his horrific outing last night against the Cardinals.  He just hasn’t been a consistent pitcher this season.  He has shown glimpses of brilliance this season including a complete game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.  But he never seemed to be able to put together back-to-back solid outings.  His next turn in the rotation is scheduled to be on Saturday against the Colorado Rockies.  Carpenter could make a spot start in Kendrick’s place.  Another angle could be that a promotion for JA Happ could be forthcoming.  Happ is scheduled to make a start at Lehigh Valley tonight.  With the trade dealine fast approaching, a trade could also be a strong possibility.
