The news we all were hoping not to hear was announced today. The Phillies have placed Jimmy Rollins on the 15-day Disabled List today with a strained right calf. According to Ruben Amaro, he will miss two to four weeks with his injury.
We believe it to be a mild to moderate strain and we’re hopeful it will be a two-to-four week recovery. As in all of our injuries, precautions will be taken so that Jimmy is 100% when he returns to the field.
Wilson Valdez was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take Rollins’ spot on the active roster. Rollins had been hitting .391 with a homer and three RBI’s in six games thus far. Rollins was injured during warmups prior to Monday’s home opener with the Nationals.
It’s a shame to see Rollins go down with an injury as he had been playing well through the first week of the season. The only consolation is that it happened now rather than in September or October. Shane Victorino most likely will take over the leadoff spot, leaving slots two-through-six intact as they are. Juan Castro will remain the starting shortstop for the time being.
