News 4/8/10: Pitchers Edition

I’ll start off with the oldest of these:

Phillies claimed Nelson Figueroa off of waivers from the Mets yesterday. He will join the team before today’s match-up yet there is no word on who he will replace.

“Our scouts saw him and know him from the past,” Phillies assistant general manager Scott Proefrock said. “He’s an experienced guy who’s been up and down. We’re just looking for some more depth, not only here, but in Triple-A. He has a history here.”

He’s an experienced reliever and this isn’t a terrible move. The Phillies haven’t had any bull pen worries with J.C. Romero and Brad Lidge out or with Kyle Kendrick replacing Joe Blanton in the rotation but having someone like Figueroa can’t hurt.

Speaking of Romero’s injury, he is making a rehab start today in Clearwater while Lidge will be throwing a bull pen session. If it goes well, Lidge will make his first rehab appearance. It’s still unknown when these guys will return.

Blanton threw and ran Wednesday and didn’t feel any discomfort. The Phillies and fans (especially Dan) are hoping for his return to the rotation. Kendrick will make his first start of 2010 in place of Blanton today against the Nats.

Blanton threw 60 times from 60 feet on level ground.

“I’m not 100 percent sure, but I think this was an optimistic first day to throw,” Blanton said. “Things went pretty well. I didn’t feel anything on any of the throws. I didn’t feel anything running. I feel a little bit more normal. The first three days, laughing hurt, sneezing and coughing hurt. It gradually got a little better.”

Get better, Big Joe.
