John Mayberry, Jr. broke up a potential no-hitter by the Orioles but the Phillies were still shut-out on Friday, 2-0. Mayberry, who had the only hit for the Phillies, got a single off Dennis Sarfate in the eighth. Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth, and Ben Francisco were the only other batters to reach base via walk and Brian Schneider reached on an error.
Kyle Kendrick got the start and was finally solved. He went five solid innings, allowing a run on three hits and two walks while striking out four. After breezing through the first four innings, he was tapped for a pair in the fifth.
Placido Polanco did not play in the game and is expected to play in a Minor League game on Saturday. His injury isn’t serious and the Phillies are taking it one day at a time.
