PRC: Jayson Werth

Player: Jayson Werth
Number: 28
Position: RF
Bats/Throws: R/R

Consistency: Capping off the PRC segment and our trio of All Star OF’s is Jayson Werth, the MVP of that corps. He emerged as a power threat and complete player, batting .268 with 98 runs, 36 homers, 99 RBI’s and 20 stolen bases. His batting average peaked at .274 after the AS break but his power numbers were a steady 6-7 homers a month and 15-20 RBI’s, very good averages that were consistent all year.

In the playoffs, he went on a power tear. After batting .357 with 2 homers and 4 RBI’s, his average dropped but he still kept up the power numbers, slugging a total of 7 homers and 13 RBI’s for the entire playoffs.

Regular Season Stats: 159 G, 571 AB, 98 R, 153 H, 26 2B, 1 3B, 36 HR, 99 RBI, 20 SB, 91 BB, 156 K, .268 AVG, .373 OBP, .506 SLG

Post Season Stats: 15 G, 51 AB, 13 R, 14 H, 0 2B, 1 3B, 7 HR, 13 RBI, 0 SB, 11 BB, 18 K, .275 AVG, .360 OBP, .467 SLG

Fielding: He had a career low in percentage (.984) and high in errors (6). He has a very strong arm but tends to over throw or be off his mark. He is also very fast in the field and will chase down any ball without pulling up but tends to over-run or miss-play balls in the corner and off the wall. He’s tremendously talented and is still working on harnessing that talent to turn himself into a complete player.

Health: He was never hurt.

Intangibles: He’s such a unique athlete. His huge frame, quick and powerful swing, and fleet of foot make him a highly coveted athlete. Though his hitting needs no work, his 156 strike outs were a huge shock and a number that needs to be worked on. With work, he can mature as a hitter and drop those totals.

Overall Grade: B+. Career highs in every key category except average will get you a good grade. He’s a tremendous athlete and I expect a much better season next year for him.
