2009 Phillies Moment #5.5: J-Roll’s Autograph

We all remember Jimmy Rollins’ front runner speech in the middle of August 2008.  The Phillies were in the middle of a road trip which took them through Los Angeles (where Rollins called the fans front runners) and San Diego.

Now as some of you know, our good buddy Mike Patota of Liberty Bell Sports is stationed in San Diego due to military obligations.  He tries to see the Phils whenever they come out to play the Padres.  Now, a few days after Rollins had his words, the Phillies and Padres had a nationally televised game on ESPN.

Yes folks, that is Mike.

Not only that, but he bought a T-Shirt that said “J-Roll is right, I am a frontrunner”.

Now, if that was the end of the story, it would be pretty amusing, but what does it have to do with 2009?  Well, I am glad you asked.  When Mike came home for 4th of July, he went to the Phillies-Mets game with the shirt.  Before the game Rollins stopped to sign autographs and Mike was there waiting.

Mike asked him if he remembered the sign in San Diego and Rollins asked, “The front runner one?” Rollins knew, and when he saw the shirt, he laughed.

For that day, the Phillies won, 4-1 over the Mets.  Many fans went home happy that day, but only one had a day like Mike’s.
