Olney: Ichiro Rejects Phillies Offer; Signs With Yankees

In an interesting report from ESPN’s Buster Olney, the New York Yankees will bring back Ichiro Suzuki for another season.

But what’s interesting about that is that Suzuki reportedly declined a two-year, $14 million offer from the Phillies to sign the one-year deal with New York.

The Phillies are in need of another corner outfielder and the pursuit of Ichiro became a curious one. Ichiro isn’t exactly known for his pop, especially with Cody Ross, Nick Swisher and Josh Hamilton still out there.

The price tag and years that Ross, Swisher and Hamilton are asking for must be turning off the Phillies. Hamilton is still trying to land a five-year deal somewhere while Swisher and Ross want four and three years respectively.

Suzuki, 39, would have made a nice lead-off hitter, but that would have given the Phillies an outfield of Suzuki, Domonic Brown, Ben Revere and Darin Ruf. The only way that deal would have made sense is if the Phillies then traded Brown for 36-year-old Alfonso Soriano, which would have continued to increase the age of the team.

Rosenthal: Phillies, Giants Going After Pagan

The Phillies pursuit of B.J. Upton failed when he signed a five-year, $75.25 million deal with the Atlanta Braves.

But the Phillies pursuit of a starting centerfielder is far from over. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports that the Phillies are interested in free agent Angle Pagan, having offered him a four-year deal.

The Phillies aren’t alone. Pagan’s former club, World Champion San Francisco, has also offered Pagan a four-year deal.

Rosenthal writes:

Pagan’s injury history concerns Phillies officials, sources say — he has played in more than 123 games only twice in his career, including last season when he appeared in a career-high 154.

His speed, athleticism and offensive ability, however, are all enticing.

Pagan last season batted .288 with a .778 OPS and stole 29 bases in 36 attempts. His numbers out of the leadoff spot — a .290 batting average and .829 OPS in 338 at-bats — were even better.

Morosi: Phillies to Offer Cole Hamels $120 Million

The Phillies want to make sure Cole Hamels is wearing red pinstripes for a very long time.

Jon Morosi of FOX, who reported earlier about Shane Victorino, said that the Phillies have a $120 million deal on the table for Hamels.

But Morosi added that some people within the organization aren’t optimistic that Hamels will take the deal, instead setting his sights on free agency.

The Phillies hope to to keep Hamels, but some people within the organization aren’t overly optimistic they can prevent him from going to free agency at this point. Phillies GM Ruben Amaro, who is credited by people in the organization for his ability to lock up the team’s stars to long deals, has said all along he hopes to keep Hamels. Amaro declined comment on the amount of the coming offer to Hamels.

Hamels has said he wants to test free agency but has also said the Phillies are his first choice and he’d love to stay in Philadelphia.
