Stutes to Have Season-Ending Surgery

Phillies RHP Michael Stutes (Kim Yong/Philly Inquirer)

The season never got off the ground for Michael Stutes.

The right-hander will undergo arthroscopic surgery by Dr. Yocum on June 26, ending his season.

Stutes had shoulder inflamation after suffering discomfort during Spring Training and trying to pitch at the start of the season. He landed on the DL and never pitched since.

Phillies GM Ruben Amaro said that Stutes’ surgery is exploratory more than anything and that the Phillies will know more about the injury and recovery time after he has the surgery next Tuesday.

Stutes hasn’t thrown since April, and it’s hard to believe he will pitch again this season. Stutes had a 6.35 ERA in 5 2/3 innings (six games) this year.

Stutes to DL; Schwimer Up

The Phillies have placed right-hander Michael Stutes on the DL with right shoulder inflammation after their 8-5 win over the D’Backs.

Replacing Stutes will be Michael Schwimer, who was 1-0 with a 1.04 ERA and two saves in seven games with the IronPigs.

Stutes started the season with some right shoulder problems. The problems didn’t really go away as Stutes posted a 6.35 ERA in 5 2/3 innings in six appearances.

Contreras to start season on DL

Jose Contreras is just flat out not ready for the regular season.

The 40-year-old right-hander had only been pitching in games the last two weeks and he’s shown signs of not being close to being ready, which is no shock. That is why Contreras will likely start the season on the disabled list.

It isn’t a health issue, general manager Ruben Amaro said. Contreras could be back in the line up by April 11.

Contreras is going to continue doing what he’s doing, which is to build up arm strength through constant repetitions.

In Matt Gelb’s tweet, he hinted that the same path could be taken for Michael Stutes, who has been experiencing shoulder stiffness.

Stutes has shoulder stiffness

Michael Stutes is experiencing some shoulder stiffness and will not start in a bullpen game against the Yankees on Friday.

Stutes, who is a lock to make the bullpen this season, said he had been feeling stiff most of spring, thinking it was just typical stiffness experienced in the spring training. “I finally had to say something,” Stutes said when the stiffness persisted.

The good news is this isn’t serious and Stutes expectes to pitch before the Phillies leave Florida on Sunday. “I’d be surprised if I didn’t throw in a game before we left here,” he said.

Antonio Bastardo will be making the start on Friday in the bullpen-only game.

Phils rookies hazed today

“The moment you’ve all been waiting for….”

That’s right, Jimmy Rollins. After Todd Zolecki tweeted about the rookie hazing, Rollins and Hunter Pence passed along to us the wonderful costumes that our Phillies rookies had to don during their flight to Atlanta.

And to no disappointment, included in this post is the picture tweeted by Rollins that contains some rather hilarious costumes. My winner: our Jewish reliever Michael Schwimer rocking a rabbi costume.

Roy-Freshing: Oswalt K’s season-high 9 in win

Ryan Zimmerman punched the Phillies’ gut with a walk-off grand slam Friday night, but in typical Phillies fashion, they bounced back and took down the Nationals on, what I guess you could call ‘the road.’

It took until the fourth inning for a team to tally a run tonight’s game at Nationals Park, when Wilson Valdez sliced a two-run triple to right field, scoring John Mayberry Jr. and Carlos Ruiz. The scoring on that play was a bit favorable to Valdez, being that Jayson Werth played a game of hop scotch out in the right-outfield corner, allowing Valdez to score.

The Phillies tacked on three more runs en route to a 5-0 victory.
