Misunderstood: Scott Rolen Left a Lasting Impression On Philadelphia

Perhaps it was the clashing of personalities with manager Larry Bowa. Or maybe it was the comment made by front office member Dallas Green. Or maybe it was the desire to win that ended it all in Philadelphia.

Whatever the reason was, Scott Rolen wanted out in 2002.

For the next decade, Philadelphia fans would boo their once-lauded All-Star, Gold-Glove third baseman, yell obscenities at him and watch him go on to hav a successful career without Philadelphia. Why? Because they were hurt.

But maybe the fans were booing the wrong guy.

Rolen turned down a massive contract extension during the 2002 season, saying that it wasn’t money but the Phillies front office didn’t have an aggressive approach to building a winning team.

Fans got scared that the best position player in their team history since Mike Schmidt, another third baseman, was about to jump ship for greener pastures.

And it happened.

Phils hire Wade

The secret agent of the Philadelphia Phillies has returned home.

Former Astros GM Ed Wade, who pretty much dealt three of the organizations top players at the time to the Phillies during his tenure, was hired by the Phillies.

His role in Philadelphia will be a special consultant in the Phillies operations department. That will include some scouting and assisting in the arbitration negotiations.

Seeing as one remark was already technically made, Wade had this to say to his skeptics who felt the Phillies fleeced Wade in their deals for Brad Lidge, Roy Oswalt and Hunter Pence.

“I’m prepared for the remarks that I only traded with the Phillies so Ruben (Amaro, Jr.) would give me a job if I got fired,” Wade said.

Phils Land Pence

After months of talk about adding a right-handed bat, the Phillies have finally added the piece that will put them over the top.

Reports are saying that the Phillies have landed Houston Astros outfielder Hunter Pence. In exchange for Pence, the team will be sending pitching prospect Jarred Cosart and first baseman Jonathan Singleton and two lesser prospect to be named later.

The deal was made without parting with Domonic Brown or Vance Worley, two popular fan-favorites.

There had been talk for the last week that the Phillies were interested in acquiring Pence. The pursuit had really kicked up a notch over the last two days as the team had made it clear that they would do just about anything to acquire Pence.

They are getting a player in Pence that is hitting .309 with 11 home runs and 62 RBIs. He has also scored 49 runs and added seven stolen bases.

He is a career .290 hitter and has hit 25 home runs each year from 2008-2010. Pence also has 56 outfield assists, proving that he is an above average defender.
