Ross, Swisher Off the Board for Phillies

Earlier today, it was reported that heavily sought corner outfielder Cody Ross had signed a three-year, $26 million deal to play in Arizona.

Last week, the Phillies intense pursuit of Ross was reported. It was known that Ross wanted a three-year deal and the Phillies were willing to go after the 31-year-old left fielder who hit 22 homers, 81 RBIs and had a .267 average and .807 OPS.

Even though the Phillies weren’t in heavy pursuit of Nick Swisher, the 32-year-old switch hitter is close to signing a deal with the Cleveland Indians. They offered him a four-year, $52 million deal, and he is close to signing there.

With Arizona signing Ross, it is possible that Jason Kubel could be available via trade, even more likely than his teammate Justin Upton.

Rosenthal: Phillies Intensify Pursuit of OF Cody Ross

The Phillies are still in need of a corner outfielder, and they are targeting Cody Ross the most to fill that spot.

According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Phillies are “intensifying pursuit of Cody Ross. Other teams also being more aggressive. Mariners¬†among those that have shown interest.”

Ross is seeking a three-year deal.

Murphy: Manuel Discusses Possible Outfield Options; Names Ichiro, Ludwick, Ross

Candidates for the outfield have been dropping off the Phillies radar like flies the past week.

B.J. Upton signed with the Braves, Angel Pagan went back to the Giants and Shane Victorino landed in Boston. And with the price tags for Josh Hamilton (likely going back to Texas) and Michael Bourn being too high, the market for a starting centerfielder and corner outfield has thinned.

But manager Charlie Manuel talked about some ideal options to fill a corner outfield position as well as center field.

A handful of names, in a series of tweets by David Murphy of the Daily News, included Ichiro Suzuki, Ryan Ludwick and Cody Ross.

“We’ve talked about Ichiro. I think Ichiro can help our team,” Manuel said, leaving people to interprete that any way they want to.

Olney: Phillies “OK” With Hamilton’s Salary, Not Years; Interested in Ross

Free agency hasn’t even started yet and things have already been off to a wonderful start. (That’s a fake account, by the way.)

The Phillies are interested in Josh Hamilton, but are turned off by the years. Buster Olney reported that the Phillies are “OK” with Hamilton’s annual salary demands, but are concerned with how many years.

Hamilton is looking to get a contract of at least seven years, a little risky for a 31-year-old with past drug and alcohol problems.

Olney also tweeted the Phillies are talking to free agent Cody Ross, who in 2010 killed the Phillies in the NLCS.
