Utley Heading to Florida; Will Play In Games

Finally some good news has officially surfaced for Chase Utley and his injured left knee.

Rehabbing with the team for the past month, Utley’s knee looked strong enough for him to head down to Clearwater. Utley will go there tomorrow and begin playing in Spring Training games immediately.

“I’m excited about it,” said Utley, who has miss the season’s first two months with chondromalacia in his left knee. “I’ve made some progress in the next two months and I’m ready to take the next step.”

Brown sent to minors; Utley, Martinez updates

It was a busy morning down in Clearwater for the Phillies. Roster moves and injury updates have been the hot topic this spring for the Phillies and it starts with Domonic Brown.

The left fielder was optioned to minor league camp this morning, meaning he will start the season with Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Brown’s spring was injury-riddled again, but thankfully not as serious as last year when he fractured a bone in his hand. He jammed his thumb diving for a ball as well as suffering a sore neck while sleeping on the bus this spring.

But injuries aside, Brown enjoyed a good offensive spring in which he hit .300 (6-for-20) with two triples, a homer and two RBIs while scoring four times. He only struck out once all spring.

Rookies, post season roster and contracts discussed today

A lot was discussed this past hour about the post season roster and beyond.

This includes the fate of the Phillies September call-ups, the size of the post season roster and a few off season moves.

Relivers Joe Savery and Justin De Fratus will go to Clearwater when playoffs begin to keep throwing just in case. They will be joined by Domonic Brown, who will not be an option for the post season roster.

Reliever Michael Schwimer and outfield Brandon Moss will be sent home at the end of the regular season.

In regards to the post season roster, the Phils ar flirting with the idea of carrying 11 pitchers. That will include the four starters, Ryan Madson, Antonio Bastardo, Brad Lidge, Michael Stutes and Vance Worley. Kyle Kendrick, Joe Blanton and David Herndon will battle for the 10th and optional 11th pitching spot.

By carrying 14 hitters, they will have eight starters, a back-up catcher and five bench players for hitting, running and fielding.

And in some future news, the Phillies have extended contract offers to every single coaching position for next season. A 99-win season would do that.

Phils letting Moyer rehab in Clearwater

The Phillies are going to let Jamie Moyer begin his rehab from Tommy John surgery at Brighthouse Field in Clearwater, reported Todd Zolecki.

“We’re providing him our space in Clearwater and our expertise,” Ruben Amaro Jr. said.

Before people jump to drastic conclusions, this is pretty much a favor Amaro is doing for Moyer, who has been a huge asset to the Phillies success in 2007 and 2008.

I wish the 49-year-old Moyer a lot of luck and a speedy recovery in his return from this injury. Many have to wonder what type of team will run the risk in signing Moyer. Is he on the Phillies radar? I sure hope not. But that doesn’t mean Moyer’s continued presence in the Phillies organization isn’t welcomed.

Stars in their eyes: Despite cameras, prospects get busy

J. Savery

While the Phillies are taking an off day, CSN decided to send it’s camera’s to Florida as the Clearwater Threshers took on the Palm Beach Cardinals (St. Louis system).

The game was televised because Phillies stars Chase Utley, Carlos Ruiz and Roy Oswalt were in the line up. But while TTB staff writer Christian Hetrick handles the pros, I will handle the prospects.

Guys who I kept my eye on included LF Jonathan Singleton, 1B/DH Joe Savery and CF Jiwan James.

J. Singleton

The first real play to focus on came in the bottom of the 4th. Cardinals pitcher Joe Kelly was cruising through the first three innings but he hit a snag in the bottom of the 4th inning.

After Kelly loaded the bases with no outs, Singleton stepped in to try and do some damage. But he looked very terrible at the plate in that at-bat, striking out on a pitch a foot from the plate for the first out. Read more of this post

Pregame Notes 5/11

Not a whole lot of pregame notes heading into tonight’s rubber match between the Phillies and Marlins. The Phils are tossing their left-handed star free agent Cliff Lee (2-3, 3.69) out against Ricky Nolasco (3-0, 3.23) for the Fish.

And with that, some interesting news came out of the injury watch today as well as some stats to make you sick. Read more of this post
