Evaluating the Michael Young Trade

It was made official Sunday morning that the Phillies acquired 3B Michael Young and cash from the Texas Rangers for reliever Josh Lindblom and prospect Lisalverto Bonilla.

It was a good fit for both teams, with the Phillies needing a third baseman and Young wanting to continue to compete as he waived his no trade clause to Philadelphia.

“The baseball part was easy,” Young told reporters on Monday in Texas. “I have a great opportunity in Philadelphia, having the opportunity to go from one great team to another. They have a position for me; I was ready for a new challenge. I like a new challenge. As a competitor, I want to see what it’s like. The hard part was my family and what it would be like for them, being away for a summer. But once we embraced that, the baseball part was easy.”

The Phillies filled a huge hole at third for one season, prolonging their search for a more permanent solution at the hot corner. They did so without giving up too much, especially while boasting a deep and rich farm system of pitchers.

Lindblom was acquired in the Shane Victorino trade to the Dodgers before the deadline last season. He didn’t really wow the Phillies coaches, especially in late-game situations where they wanted him to pitch. Lindblom posted a 4.19 ERA in 38 2/3 innings of work in the 8th inning or later during the entire season.

Manuel Evaluates Future; Will Wait At End of 2013

PHILADELPHIA — The Phillies made news the past day with all their shuffling of the coaching staff.

And though he’s on for 2013, Charlie Manuel has become a hot topic.

With Ryne Sandberg waiting in the wings to be a Major League manager soon, and preferably in Philadelphia, Manuel talked about his plans after 2013 when his current contract is up.

General manager Ruben Amaro made clear that Sandberg was not promised the Phillies job in 2014 and that Sandberg has permission to interview with other teams. Manuel also said that he is not pursuing a contract extension this season and will evaluate what he wants to do after the 2013 season.

Werth Has Kind Words For Manuel

Nationals RF Jayson Werth (Jonathan Ernst/Reuters)

WASHINGTON — Nationals right fielder Jayson Werth irritated Phillies fans last week when he faked a throw into the stands to a couple of children, claiming he was concerned with the drunk fans behind them.

Today, Bob Brookover of the¬†Philadelphia Inquirer wrote a piece that should enlighten Phillies fans on Werth’s real emotions on the organization and especially his former manager, Charlie Manuel.

Game 21: Supporting Joe

Phillies SP Joe Blanton (AP Photo/Lenny Ignelzi)

The last outing for Joe Blanton wasn’t a glamorous one.

The Phillies right-hander was whacked around in a 6-1 loss to the Padres, giving up six runs, three earned, on seven hits. Blanton (1-3, 4.34) will look to bounce back in his fourth start of the season against the Cubs.

Not only is Blanton looking to get a win but he’s looking to re-establish himself as a worthy starting pitcher in baseball as well as this star-studded Phillies rotation. Blanton is in the last year of his contract, making $8.5 million — a lot of money for a fifth starter originally paid to be a number three.

Whether the Phillies will look to trade Blanton at the deadline is a mystery; but a move at the deadline involving a starting pitcher could depend on how Blanton’s season is shaping up to be. Blanton will either be trade bait or help could be sought out if Blanton struggles or someone gets hurt.

That is too far into the future to look, just like an sort of panic button being pushed is too early.

Manuel: “It’s been a while since we’ve played this bad”

(David Maialetti/Inquirer Staff)

Charlie Manuel has obviously got to be frustrated with his offense’s performance.

It isn’t a worried expression from Manuel or his team said Jimmy Rollins but pure frustration. The Phillies dropped their Sunday afternoon game to the Padres, 6-1, which was the 10th time in their first 16 games they failed to score more than two runs.

This is definitely something new to Manuel, who hasn’t seen his team play this bad in a really long time.

“It’s been a while since we’ve played this bad,” Manuel told reporters.

Some other quotes from Manuel via the ever so busy Matt Gelb from the Inquirer.

Phils re-introduce Jim Thome

Thome adresses the media. (Screen grab from MLB.com)

At 3:30 ET, the Phils re-introduced former slugger Jim Thome to their team.

In the presser, he talked about how quick the Phils called him, playing under Charlie Manuel once again, playing first and pinch hitting.

Dressed in a dapper suit, Thome had a smile on his face throughout most of the press conference. The joy of returning to the Phillies, especially with the fact they have become one of baseball’s elite franchises since Thome’s departure in 2005, was expressed early in the conference

“It really surprised me that my phone rang that quick,” Thome said, who was signed only a couple days into the free agency period.

Thome talked about having the chance to play in Philadelphia twice, going into how it’s an honor to cycling back to clubs that he’s been a part of before.
